The Miami2Maine Paddle

In 2007 I planned and carried out a 2,000 mile paddling journey up the Atlantic seaboard to educate people about the problems facing our ocean, a project I call "Miami2Maine".   In doing so, I put my thoughts into action, reaching out to multitudes and providing inspiration to many – reminding people that we needn't wait around to follow someone else lead.

Along the way, I paddled alongside manatees and dolphins, but also alligators and sharks.  I had a few close encounters with speedboats – including a near collision with President George HW Bush coming around a seawall in Kennebunkport, Maine.  I paddled through debris, odor-stenched outfalls, and entangled sea turtles – some which I rescued and some where I was too late.   I paddled through depleted and unhealthy fisheries and nutrient overloaded estuaries, and saw much more.

Miami2Maine

The Miami2Maine paddle started as the simple desire of an ordinary woman to undertake an extraordinary event to bring attention to the current state of our ocean.

I had great success in meeting the goals I set for raising awareness.  The journey also ended as the beginning of much more.
